I have dual dynamic issues with cover like these. Below is just one cover that was shot for a series of photographs for i-D magazine. Finally, someone uses Asian and Chinese models on an international cover, solo! But at the same time, it was done for the purpose in celebration of Chinese New Years: the year of the dragon. While that's all fine and dandy, and in a way, it make some sense to dress the models up in traditional Asian-inspired clothing, isn't it also a double edge sword?
This is one of the more bearable and less stereotypical covers of the bunch. I mean, come on down! Asia and China are becoming one of the fastest modernized continents and countries in the world. While I don't think it was ever their intention, in a way, by dressing up the models in very archaic, traditional and way-past "Asian" inspired clothing, don't you think it's kind of degrading and oppressive? And isn't that a huge contradiction to "the only time we put Asian models on our cover is in "celebration" of their holiday, and so we dress them up in Asian gear"? But when it's NOT their holiday, you DON'T put them up on your cover. Even though Asian models are increasingly gaining more prominence in the industry today, very RARELY have I seen a solo cover of an Asian model WITHOUT any alludes to her or his historical traditions and/or culture.
Can we acknowledge that while differences do exist, we don't have to draw explicit attention onto them? So what if it's a celebration of their holiday? Can't you do it in a more modern/contemporary fashion (pun intended) but incorporate a few historical pieces?
Just some sense of the contradiction: you would NEVER see other (non-white, non-Western or European dictated) covers "celebrating" white people's holidays (to be politically incorrect: i.e. Christmas) with WHITE models dressed up in red-and-white garb holding candy canes and wreaths. UM THAT WOULD JUST LIKE NOT HAPPEN. AT ALL.
Let me repeat: AT ALL.
So love and hate the cover....

Girl on the rise:
It's Asia's moment. The region's economic power is growing everyday, and so are its' export of the next generation of (asian) supermodels in a global context. First, there was Du Juan. And then Liu Wen came, exploding the scene as models.com's sixth ranked international face and the current ambassador to Estee Lauder (a no easy feat). Other faces like Shu Pei, Fei Fei Sun and currently, Sui He, have also been exploding into the high fashion market like no other. Vogue covers are now flying off the racks and high fashion campaigns (um, hello Valentino) are featuring asian models more than ever. It's a proud moment to finally see some diversity in the (all white) fashion world. But where are the other minority model faces? I'd love to see real inclusion one day by having the fashion world embrace more non-white models (and no, I don't mean a Brazilian model who pretty much is white). Where are the south asian girls? Central American models? Moroccan models? Etc...
While I leave you to ponder about this question, here's a photo of a (relatively) new face: Miao Bin Si shot by Kathrin Mueller Hefftner for Fashion Gone Rogue.

Brooke Shields: Calvin Klein Jeans
Brooke Shields for Calvin Klein, shot in the 1980
Filmed in one shot - this has still got to be one of my most favorite fashion commercials ever. To get the words precisely straight like that while posing like Tyra Banks could do no other, Shields tops it like no one could today.
She puts all the celebrities and models who flub lines today to shame. This was real fashion, real talent. What happened?

Interesting filming concept - but it’s cute, it’s fun, it’s modern. Vive!

Oh my god. And Yo Yo Ma’s version makes it even better.

Love for Los Angeles
Anna Selezneva for Juicy Couture Spring 2012 Campaign
Shot by Inez & Vinoodh, of course.
There's something absolutely perfect about this shot. It's one of those photographs that captures the very
moment and exact essence of a situation. Hard to come by, but fantastic to view. And I love the California vibe it gives off - I almost feel like I'm there!

Warning: this blog is not an Alex Cunha blog
And yet it's oddly turning out to be one! If you're viewing this blog for the first time, let me reassure you: this is NOT an Alex Cunha blog. It is one on fashion, street style, personal tibits and fashion photography/editorials. It's not a fan-obsessed blog dedicated to one model. But I mean on the other side, how can you blame me? The man is gorgeous. Hah!
Also did I mention that I'm trying to intern in Brazil this summer? Proof that this obsession has gotten borderline bad. Another hah!
Behold the glory of Alex Cunha:

Oneword.com
Have you heard of this website? Oneword.com gives users one word - in the case of today, it was "bellow". Users have 1 minute to write anything that comes to mind incorporating the word or just simply being reminded of the word. Here's my paragraph:
bellow the fringes lied a hand
a hand that was old skinned and broken
bellow the fingers lied blood
blood that tasted like the dear old rust
her bones melted bellow her skin
and all her happiness drained away
from her pale face to the tears that dropped below
this is her story.
a story of love and loss.
everything fell.
bellow her broken trust

Frenchmen Street
On one particular sunny afternoon, I was strolling down New Orleans. The city has a huge french presence as evident by the French
Quarter and other places. But it was this street that I glanced up towards that echoed towards me. Despite not being in France or
anywhere near it, here's a tribute towards all things Francophone-inspired. Viva France/slash, one day I'll be there for sure.

Prepare for streetstyle: (these people have got it down)
Especially model Isabella Melo. I love her moody black-on-black ensembles. See her two outfits immediately after the words.
Included are also other brilliantly dressed people. Love it, hate it, que?

Campaign Season: my two favorites
The first is Moschino Cheap and Chic: the contrast between the clothing and the fruit is brilliant. This is fashion-art done fabulously well.
I can only imagine how uncomfortable it must have been shooting this...
Poor model!
The second is Dolce & Gabbana featuring Monica Bellucci and model Bianca Balti: this one is certainly an improvement from
last season's by far. I like how it showcases Italian culture/lifestyle while remaining true to the integrity of the brand -
family and relationship-based. Bravo!

Free Write
If you don't love yourself, how can you even begin to love others?
Remember this: nothing is ever your fault. Society is made up of social constructs that unfortunately oppresses and privileges others at the expense of yet others too. Nothing is ever the truth. So constantly be seeking it. The truth comes in multiple layers.
As I embark on the second semester of my junior year, I think about how much I have come and how much I have changed. Fashion is personal. Personal is fashion. My style has ever evolved to be more utilitarian, and so has my mindset and personality.
Who knows what I'll end up doing? But I want fashion and the truth to be both in my futures.
